5 Simple Mental Math Tips for Daily Practice
Building mental math fluency doesn't need to be overwhelming. Here are five low-pressure tips you can use every day — whether you're learning, teaching, or just want to feel sharper with numbers.
1. Round first, then adjust
For addition and subtraction, round to friendly numbers first. 47 + 28 becomes 50 + 28 = 78, then subtract 3 to get 75. Same idea for 93 − 17: round 93 to 90, subtract 17 (73), then add back 3 → 76.
2. Break numbers apart
Split bigger problems into smaller ones. 7 × 24 = 7 × 20 + 7 × 4 = 140 + 28 = 168. This "distributive" strategy makes multiplication feel less daunting.
3. Use doubles and halves
Doubles are easy: 7 + 7 = 14. Use them for near-doubles: 7 + 8 = 7 + 7 + 1 = 15. For multiplication, halving one number and doubling the other keeps the product the same: 16 × 5 = 8 × 10 = 80.
4. Look for 10s
Numbers that add to 10 (or 100) are your friends. 7 + 3 = 10, so 27 + 43 = 20 + 40 + 10 = 70. Spotting these pairs speeds up mental addition.
5. Practice in small doses
Five minutes a day beats an hour once a week. Keep it light — grocery totals, tip math, or a quick puzzle. Consistency builds fluency without burnout.
